Internal Sustainability Manager


The Internal Sustainability Manager is responsible for initiating, developing and implementing co-op wide sustainability programs related to sustainability performance quantification, reporting and engagement.  The Internal Sustainability Manager will lead and team with others to reduce our overall ecological footprint as well as strengthen our social and economic endeavors through a programmatic approach.  He/she will assist in goal setting and long range planning for continual improvement. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct OVís Strategic Energy Plan, and adapt it as necessary to meet the changing needs of the business
  • Quantify the environmental footprint of the business and its subsidiaries and identify improvement opportunities that support the business goals
  • Manage sustainability performance reporting to key customers, trade associations and other stakeholders
  • Manage activities to minimize environmental impacts associated with employee commuting
  • Develop and implement initiatives to minimize the overall waste footprint at OV facilities
  • Develop and implement an engagement strategy to quantify and mitigate Scope 3 environmental impacts
  • Develop and implement programs that result in sustainable behavior at work and at home among employees.
  • Design and deliver educational trainings for employees
  • Manage internal departmental communications, including content on OV intranet, sustainability list serve, print and other media
  • Serve on various task forces and committees as a representative of the Sustainability Department
  • Conduct surveys and focus groups to determine interest and/or satisfaction with sustainability programs and events

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Write policy for integration of sustainability practices into all departments
  • Track and evaluate return on investment for new and existing projects
  • Solicit and manage vendors to fulfill program objectives
  • Work with our grant writer to source funds for project implementation
  • Manage LEED reporting for new construction projects
  • Research emerging sustainability trends and incorporate into program when appropriate; alternative fuels, energy efficiency, etc.
  • Develop a zero-waste plan for events and communicate the details of the program to appropriate stakeholders
  • Contribute content for consumer-facing blog quarterly
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Masterís degree in business administration, sustainability or relevant field
  • Coursework in environmental science, management, sustainability, accounting or relevant fields
  • LEED AP or GA, Renewable energy, Certified Energy Manager or Energy Manager in Training certifications preferred
  • Experience leading sustainability projects preferred
  • Outgoing and engaging personality and the ability to motivate and lead groups required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Access, required
  • Strong organizational and communications (written and verbal) skills
  • Strong project management skills
  • Experience with GRI framework a plus
