Carley was born and raised on her family farm. In 1988 her grandfather and six other farmers came together to create the farmer-owned cooperative of Organic Valley. Since then her grandfather has sat on the board of directors for past 25 years, while running the family farm along with his sons and grandchildren. Carley’s family’s farm is now on its third generation in Southwest Wisconsin. The Peters Farm produces: organic milk from their herd of 200 Holstein cows, organic eggs from 2,500 laying hens, and organic pork from 150 hogs. Carley is a young part-time farmer and a full-time marketing student at Western Technical College in La Crosse, WI. She loves to be in her garden during the summer or driving her snowmobile during the winter with her family. Carley enjoys telling her family story and hearing others’, especially young farmers. She is excited about the 2013 Gen-O Teach-In because she hopes the kids will take away a great message about organic farming. Carley believes children are our future and we have a responsibility to help them to connect food with health – that what they put in their bodies now will affect their health in the future.
