Name: Preston Green
Hometown: Richland Center, WI
Farm name: Rebel Ridge Family Farms
Describe your farm:
Our farm is 640 acres and we rent about another 300 to 400 a year so we are always farming around 1000 acres. We raise beef cattle on the farm and we are finishing on average around 300 head a year. We have around 120 cows and livestock all together add up to around 300-400.
Our farm is gorgeous. I really appreciate what we have now that I do not get to be there as much during my favorite time of year, summer.
What do you do on the farm?
My role on the farm is to be an extra set of hands when Dad is around and when he is not I manage and run things.
How long have you been farming?
I have been farming all my life and I intend to keep it that way.
Why do you farm?
I farm because I love it. I know that I am a farmer at heart. It is what I do. I have so many deep ties to it. My family has farmed for generations and I hope to one day continue that tradition.
What do you like about farming?
I love that you are not guaranteed a salary and that you are paid based on what you produced. If only everything were like this. I love farming organically as well.
What you do when you’re not farming?
I actually stayed in River Falls this summer and am working at a restaurant and with another farmer. I really miss my farm and working with my family.
I like working, but I also love riding. I have a horse that I have been neglecting and I cannot wait to see him.
Favorite OV product and why?
Has to be the [Organic Prairie] meat.
What’s the coolest thing about being a Gen-O farmer?
The coolest thing a bout being a Gen-O is that we are defying the odds. Most farmers are older. I think the average age of a conventional farmer is 60. We are doing what most people run from and I love it.
