Organic Valley: Our Co-op

Co-op of the Month: January

In recognition of the International Year of Cooperatives, we will be sharing the stories of different cooperatives throughout the year. We're kicking off the series with our very own story of CROPP, the farmer-owned co-op behind the Organic Valley brand. Read on and enjoy!

CROPP Cooperative

Most folks think of Organic Valley and Organic Prairie as sources of delicious and healthful organic foods. What they don’t know is that the key to our success is our farmer-owned cooperative business model, known as Cooperative Regions of Organic Producer Pools (CROPP).

CROPP Cooperative CEIEIO George Siemon has summed up our cooperative as neatly as anyone could. “We are a social experiment disguised as a business,” he says. This rings true at many levels for individuals, communities, and ecosystems, as well as the animals, both wild and domestic, that inhabit them.

To recognize the contributions of all involved in making our Cooperative successful, our Board of Directors launched a program which gives a portion of the Cooperative’s profits to the farmer-owners, employees and community. The rest of the profits are invested in the Cooperative to keep it strong and serving family farmers for generations to come.

Our commitment to the cooperative model and to our mission has enabled us to keep farm families on the land and pay them the actual, unsubsidized cost of conscientious—organic—agriculture.

On our path, we've learned that when you do things right, there are no shortcuts. But, though our challenges are many, when we join our cooperative hearts and minds, the solutions are endless.

It is our hope that many more citizens will benefit from our continued cooperation. Because goodness pays dividends without count.
