Farmers Advocating for Organics (FAFO) began with the 2002 Farm Bill, which included an exemption for organic farmers from contributing to national promotion programs (e.g., “Got Milk?” and “Pork: The Other White Meat”) . In response, CROPP Cooperative farmer-owners came up with the idea to pool their exemptions into an organic-focused granting fund as a way to promote and advance organic farming.
After years of planning and organizing, the Farmers Advocating for Organics Fund launched in early summer 2006.To this day, the fund is administered by a committee of CROPP farmer-owners and funded entirely by annual, voluntary contributions from CROPP farmer-owners, making it the largest—and only—farmer-funded and organic-focused granting program in the country. In the same spirit in which CROPP Cooperative began, FAFO has sought to contribute to strong rural communities, profitable family farms and a stable marketplace.
Since our first granting cycle in the spring of 2007, we have invested approximately $2.7 million dollars in organic projects, research and programs. The contributions of CROPP farmer-owners have supported young and transitioning farmers, on-farm organic research, anti-GMO initiatives and so much more—all of which impact organic farmers and consumers alike.
FAFO provides a way for our cooperative's farmers to support solutions to issues facing organic farmers today and that address the long-term needs of the organic marketplace and organic agriculture into the future. By combining resources, we are able to invest in projects that directly and indirectly affect the livelihoods of all the cooperative’s farmer-funders and of organic farmers across the country.
Together, we are able to have a greater impact on organic agriculture and contribute to a more secure organic future.
The Farmers Advocating for Organics Fund’s mission is to protect and promote organic farmers by investing in organic research, education and advocacy.
