Hi Dan,
I've enjoyed reading your emails I get about all the types of birds. So I just had to tell you what my son and saw on 12/26. We get a lot of blackbirds here and on this day we noticed how many blackbirds were in our large back yard. We watch them for a few minutes and then suddenly they flew to the front yard almost covering the whole ground. We'd been having quite of bit of rain around this time so I'm assuming they were filling their little bellies. And when they flew away there sat one single dove. We have a lot of fun watching and feeding the birds that come around all year long and hopefully the next time I will have my digital camera in hand.
Dear Debra:
The weather you have in Georgia is much different than ours this time of the year. It’s been months since I’ve seen a black bird in opur area let alone a large flock of them. There are large flocks of starlings that winter over if they have a source of food and nighttime shelter. They hand around livestock feedlots, where there are outbuildings.
It is a common sight in the spring and fall to have a large flock of Red-winged blackbirds or Grackles in the yard when they are migrating through the area. They may be spending the winter in your area, the way it sounds.
So good to hear from you and hope your continue your walks down Nature’s trail.
Naturally yours,
Dan
