Love your articles and just had to comment on the constant (almost) buzz of the Anna's hummingbird in our area. They are here in Davis, CA almost all year long. I feed them a mixture of boiled water and sugar and they love it. At our acreage in the foothills of the Sierras (at 4,000 ft. elevation) I have also put a feeder in a tree with a birdfeeder a short distance away. I got up to my nature retreat for a few days a week. Finally a few of the forest birds are coming to the feeder. What really amazed me is the activity at the hummingbird feeder; both butterflies and hummingbirds are coming regularly. I think one of the hummers is an Anna's hummingbird but not sure yet what the very tiny one is. Deep in the forest I can count on the hummingbirds to give me a show. In the Davis, CA rural area where I live, the Red Winged Blackbirds are plentiful and so are the Meadowlarks. I fear for their nests when the farmers cut their tall wheat crops. Hay is going for an enormous price now; has doubled in price, actually up to $14.00 a bale. Everyone is eager to reap the rewards of the cut fields out here. That's about it from the Davis, CA rural area and the foothills of the Sierras. Thanks for sharing all the good nature news from the midwest, my old stomping grounds.
