I would like to know if skunks hibernate? They are in my yard and I'm afraid to go out to my pool. HELP PLEASE!!!!!
Dear Judy:
Yes, skunks in your area hibernate through the cold months of winter but when the temperature goes up above freezing, they, like opossums, wake and are out looking for something to eat. They are most active at night during the warm months but in early spring, when there is less food available, they may search for food day and night to satisfy their hunger. They are very good scavengers and take advantage of a free lunch of cat or dog food or anything that’s left for them to find. They are not aggressive and are fine if you don’t go near them but with a skunk, you don’t have to get to close to get their message. If you eliminate any food source for them, they hopefully will have no reason to stay around.
Thank you for your kind support and enjoy the pool.
Naturally yours,
Dan
