Building with Compressed Earth Blocks: Dan Johnson
Building with Compressed Earth Blocks (CEBs) will present how earthen bricks can be produced, how they are used in the construction of thermal mass walls, and why they are an energy and environmental alternative. A CEB machine will be on hand to demonstarate how these masonry bricks are hyraulically pressed from local soils and used in the construction of walls.
Dan Johnson is the owner of Midwest Earth Builders LLC a company located in southwestern Wisconsin, that specializing in energy efficient design, sustainable building, and compressed earth block (CEB) production and construction. Since 1997, Dan has constructed homes built with CEBs in Colorado, New Mexico, Iowa, and Wisconsin. In 2008, Midwest Earth Builders received national recognition for Compressed Earth Blocks as part of Sustainable Industries magazine’s annual award: Top 10 Green Building Products of 2008. Dan is also the CEB “Expert” on Mother Earth News “Ask the Experts” web column.
The Future of Renewables: Rich Bannon
Learn why the Kickapoo Region is a leader in green building and renewable energy. This workshop will focus on the future of renewables and grant programs. There will be discussions on the utility rate increases, and also on new technologies in all the renewables.
Rich Bannon started PSP&L in 2006 after many years in the welding and construction business. At that time he recognized the immediate need for renewable energy and decided to leave the welding business. He began working for a solar company in California, and became trained in Solar PV, Solar hot water and Wind. He’s now a full service installer for all three through Wisconsin's Focus on Energy Program. Rich is currently a certified Solar PV Site Assessor and is training to become a Wind Site Assessor. He specializes in Off Grid battery systems. His company services a 150 mile radius from Prairie du Chien, WI which includes Iowa, Minnesota and northern Illinois.
Financing Your Energy Efficiency: Jim Olson
This presentation will walk people through the options of financing Energy Upgrade projects. This will include financial incentives available from Focus on Energy and Utilities along with explaining the tax deductions and tax credits available. Jim will also go over potential loans and grants available, and will also provide a breakdown of the simple payback versus life cycle payback.
Jim Olson has been consulting on Energy and Building Performance for 8 years and has a primary focus on ‘Net Zero’ and Low Energy buildings through an integrated approach. This approach is unique in the construction industry. His firm offers a comprehensive and integrated approach that has proven to yield immediate and ongoing savings, leading the client from conceptual design through project implementation and ongoing operations and maintenance.
Pathway to “Net-Zero”: John Fergus
This workshop will work with the concept of the “Net-Zero” home. The term pathway to will accurately describe the workshop in that we will work with the many ways that we can bring our lives into a form that has a minimal carbon footprint. After we have explored this concept we will work with a hands-on model of a net zero passive solar model and see the workings as they actually exist in a given form.
John Fergus is a founding partner in the energy consulting firm E3 Coalition headquartered in Viroqua Wisconsin. John has an arts degree from the University of Wisconsin and an Engineering Degree from the University of Minnesota. He has a certification in Feng Shui from the BTB masters program in SanFrancisco CA. The material in the workshop is based on experience of over thirty years designing and building high performance houses as well as training and research in the area of energy efficiency and renewable energy.
