Organic Valley, the nation’s largest cooperative of organic farmers and a leading organic brand, has chosen Pythagoras Solar windows for its new headquarters to support the co-op’s “triple bottom line” of sustainability—social responsibility, ecological integrity and economic stability— by transforming window facades into renewable energy generating assets. Organic Prairie, the brand of delicious organic meats produced by the same farmer-owned co-op as Organic Valley, today announced it has signed a partnership with Lorentz Meats, a family-owned meat market and processing plant with four decades of history in Cannon Falls, Minnesota and neighboring regions. Organic Valley, the nation’s largest cooperative of organic farmers and a leading organic brand, and Gundersen Health System today announced construction has begun on the Cashton Greens Wind Farm, Wisconsin’s first community wind project. This collaborative project will feature two wind turbines expected to generate nearly 5 megawatts of energy for Cashton’s power grid—enough to power 1,000 homes each year. The energy produced will more than offset electricity used at Organic Valley’s Cashton Distribution Center and its La Farge headquarters facilities, and represents about five percent of Gundersen’s energy independence goal. read more

The State of Ohio today agreed that it will no longer pursue regulations limiting labeling on organic dairy products. Ohio had attempted to prohibit statements on labels which informed consumers that organic dairy products are produced without antibiotics, pesticides or synthetic hormones. After the Organic Trade Association (OTA) sued the State of Ohio, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals sided with consumers’ right to know and gutted the Ohio rule, finding that it was unconstitutional. Ohio has now agreed to abandon the rule rather than trying to revive it, recognizing that the First Amendment allows organic dairy products to proudly state that they are produced in accordance with the organic standards, without the use of synthetic growth hormones, pesticides, or antibiotics. read more
