Glad to read about other folks' dislike of carrageenan. It hurts our stomachs. We try to support your dairies but will not buy anything with carrageenan or that is ultra pasteurized. We are now purchasing a Calif based organic brand in glass bottles. It is the only one w/o these we can find. However, we will talk to our Market of Choice store manager about this.

Hi Lucia and Darrell,

Thanks for your comments. Perhaps you'd prefer our traditionally pasteurized heavy whipping cream without carrageenan. Your local retail store should be able to order this for you, if they don't carry it already.

Hazel Burns from Washington State on January 10th, 2012
If the only reason for adding carageenan is to prevent separation then there is simply no need for carageenan. Just put "shake before opening" on your cream cartons. Cream with additives can be obtained anywhere and more cheaply than Organic Valley brand. Organic Valley is a premium brand and we pay extra for it, so why don't you just concentrate on quality and leave the adulterated rubbish to the rest of the industry. It does Organic Valley no good to be associated with an inferior proiduct - it is bad PR.

Hi Hazel,

Thanks for the note. We offer our heavy whipping cream in two versions: traditionally pasteurized, which has no carrageenan, and ultra-pasteurized, which contains carrageenan. Perhaps you'd prefer our traditionally pasteurized cream without carrageenan. Your retail store should be able to order this for you, if they don't stock it already.

The reason we add carrageenan to our ultra-pasteurized cream is so that it can reach its long shelf life while maintaining its integrity. Without carrageenan, the cream would not only begin to separate, but the fat portion would become solid (i.e. butter). Even with shaking, this layer would most likely not break apart or go back to its liquid form.

I hope this helps!

In addition to allergic reactions, I think carageenan gives a terrible off-flavor to cream and other dairy products that contain it. So I will not buy anything containing carageenan. I vote with my pocketbook.

Hi Lois,

Thanks for the note. Perhaps you'd prefer our traditionally pasteurized (HTST) heavy whipping cream without carrageenan. Your retail store should be able to order this for you from their distributor, if they do not have it in stock.

I also wanted to mention just because the USDA approves Carageenan to be safe in organic products doesn't mean it is. This is a big cop out. You should know and understand to have CLEAN product!!!!!!
Colleen L from Colorado on December 31st, 2011
Why do companies us Carageenan everyone calls it Natural, so is gasoline but who wants gasoline in their food. Carageenan is used to de-ice planes. It comes from a natural red sea weed and then the food scientists changed it. I am very allergic to it. Why do you use Carageenan. I grew up on a dairy and the cream that comes out of cows does not have Carageenan in it and it was fine. Please be responsible and keep our food clean you are on the right track being organic. But putting additives is not a good thing. I am afraind to use any of your products due to cross contamination.

Hi Colleen,

Organic Valley offers its heavy whipping cream in two versions: HTST pasteurized, which has no carrageenan, and ultra-pasteurized, which contains carrageenan. The ultra-pasteurized version has a longer shelf life, so carrageenan is added to help keep the cream from separating. If you personally prefer to avoid carrageenan, look for our "pasteurized" heavy whipping cream; your retail store should be able to order it for you if they do not have it in stock.

I posted a comment back in April regarding the added carrageenan and the ketogenic diet. I have since asked the 2 grocery stores in my area that carry OV (Harris Teeter and Whole Foods) to order me the regular pasteurized version and they both said that they could not. So I am again asking you to please consider removing the carrageenan from the ultra pasteurized version. In regards to the kids being treated with the ketogenic diet for epilepsy, the added carrageenan is a carbohydrate not being accounted for and could therefore be a trigger for seizures. The bottom line is, if carrageenan is needed thicken the product, extend the shelf life and prevent separation, I don't want to drink cream that old anyway, let alone feed 50g or more to my daughter at each meal. This leaves me only one option, switch to another brand; non-organic and ultra pasteurized anyway (not sure which is better!) The carrageenan is just not an option. Just label it "shake well"!!!

Hi Dawn,

Thanks for the feedback. I'll be sure to pass all of your comments along to our product team.

I'm sorry to hear your local grocers are unable to order our traditionally pasteurized whipping cream without carrageenan. I'd suggest using our store locator to find other retailers in your area who may carry this particular item. Thanks!

Hi,

I love your pastured whipping cream! Went to the store to purchase some yesterday, and only had the option to buy the ultra-pasteurized variety. It was very disappointing, and I chose a non-pastured, non-ultra pasteurized local whipping cream instead. Why do you offer two options? It seems like vat pasteurized, pastured products are the cream of the (pasteurized) crop, so why not offer only the superior product? It seems strange to me that you would ultra-pasturize pastured dairy products! Also, the non-ultra-pasteurized variety is not available in the 8 oz size, which is all some stores carry. Please consider changing all your pastured products to vat-(not ultra!)pasturized. Thank you.

i love the organic valley heavy whipping cream. i whip it with powdered sugar and vanilla essence.
i put it on a fresh made pie or hot pudding.
or just whip it up and eat alone.
6 days of skim milk, or no dairy, just so i can have it.
the only thing that would make it better, is if i had coupons.

I prefer gently pasteurized whipping cream too. But is it homogenized? Besides ultra pasteurization homogenization is another nasty process that ruins milk and our health.
Angie at Organic Valley

Hi Mina, Organic Valley Heavy Whipping Cream is not homogenized. You can find a list of all of our non homogenized products here.

I was really bummed to discover that your whipping cream has carrageenan in it. I used to buy your brand because it was one of only two brands of cream that did not contain this substance. I have read four different studies that conclude that carrageenan breaks down in your stomach into a different substance which can contribute to intestinal cancers. I can't say for sure if that is true but I know that I get incredibly sick if i consume it. now I have to take this garbage back and start shopping at the other store where the cream is carrageenan free. what ever happened to wholesome food? I thought that a "farmers coop" would try to avoid adding cruddy chemicals to the food even if "its from a vegetable source." Very dissapointed. I am no longer an Organic Valley customer.
Angie at Organic Valley

Hi Bradly,

Organic Valley offers its heavy whipping cream in two versions: HTST pasteurized, which has no carrageenan, and ultra-pasteurized, which contains carrageenan. The ultra-pasteurized version has a longer shelf life, so carrageenan is added to help keep the cream from separating. Carrageenan is made from seaweed, and we use only undegraded, food-grade carrageenan in our products. The USDA included carrageenan as an acceptable ingredient for organic products in the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances. This list is recommended to the USDA for approval by the National Organic Standards Board. If you personally prefer to avoid carrageenan, look for our "pasteurized" heavy whipping cream; your retail store should be able to order it for you if they do not have it in stock.
