Is your dairy 100% grass fed? That's what I prefer

Hi Ed,

Our co-op requires all of its farmers to practice pastured-based production, meaning that a significant portion of our cows' diets comes from pasture. We recognize that cows are ruminant animals whose stomachs are designed to eat grass and forage plants. Since 1995 we have had a pasture policy with minimum requirements (which we fought hard to have included in the national organic standards) of 120 days of pasture each year, with grazing supplying a minimum of 30% of total diet (average dry matter intake). Many of our farmers are able to provide much more of their cows' diet from grazing. However, very few have conditions that allow for a 100% grass fed diet to fully meet the nutritional needs of their animal. So our farmers work on continuous improvements of their pastures, to constantly increase the percentage of pasture in their cows' diets, and strive for a complete and nourishing diet overall that is rounded out with dried forages, silage, and grains as appropriate and available.

Hi, Tracy & all! Thanks for the friendly follow-up you sent my mom (Patty, in Issaquah). She'd called me the week before to rave about your ready disclosure and knowledgeability when you answered the phone at OV. I said, "That confirms it!" because I'd just seen OV rated "A+" in the SIX applicable categories of Ellis Jones's Better World Shopping Guide (butter/cheese/milk/soy/eggs/juice). ALSO, he ranks Organic Valley #3 in his "20 Best List" (based on wide-ranging sources of corporate records for labor practices, animal treatment, environmental and social responsibility, etc.)--meaning you're third on his list of the 20 most ethical companies on the planet!

Even more, using much stricter criteria, cornucopia.org rates OV "excellent" (4 out of 5) for dairy and "very good" (3 out of 5) for eggs--especially noteworthy since Cornucopia ranks ONLY organic products (including some tiny family brands sold only locally, and not in stores!). Thus Horizon Organic, while rated "C" in Better World Shopper (compared to dairies of all kinds, including factory farms), scores even worse with Cornucopia ("0" out of 5!).

I'm so glad our local health food store carries your milk products! This fat free milk has the best taste I've known. Since I live in a desert, I cannot have my own pasture, but am sure glad I have access to your milk. Thank you so much, and please keep up the awesome work. I had never bought organic milk, then a few months ago my family moved to Puerto Rico. I was shocked at the lack of regulation in reguards to food. This pushed me to look for organic products. Your milk has been a godsend, I feel safe giving it to my 2 year old and it is always fresh, taste wonderful. We will look for this when we get back to the states. Thank you for making this product available here.

I buy this product because it is organic, supports family farms, but there are many milk products that do this. The one extra special thing this milk has is Potassium! It is difficult to get enough potassium each day, and this milk helps.
