3 After-School Snacks That Won’t Spoil Their Dinner

Are they getting enough rest? Did I read them enough books today? And, hey, what’s that ingredient I can’t even pronounce? You guessed it -- mom probs! With such hectic schedules, how do we begin to prioritize? And what parent doesn’t stress about what to feed the little ones in our lives? There are so many options!

As a mama to three boys who are always digging in the fridge for a snack, it can be challenging to keep healthy, go-to snacks on hand that keep the dreaded “hanger” away and are made for little hands. I found a lot of great options that I know I can trust and are kid-approved by scanning the aisles at my local food co-op and picking up Organic Valley products.

With back to school on the horizon (yikes, right?), here are a few of my current lunchbox and after-school favorites to help navigate those daily snack attacks -- because, let’s face it, they’re real!

A young girl drinks chocolate milk with a plate of cookies and her toy mouse on the table in front of her.

Ultra™ Milk

Here are the quick facts on this special milk

  • 50% more protein (13 grams per serving)
  • 50% less sugar than regular milk
  • 40% more calcium for growing those strong bones
  • Lactose-free
  • And of course, being from Organic Valley means it’s always organic -- produced without toxic pesticides, added hormones, GMOs, or antibiotics.

All of that alone makes Ultra a great after-school snack.

But let’s back up. You might be asking, “What is Organic Valley Ultra Milk in the first place?”

Ultra is the very first organic ultra-filtered milk. Ultra-filtering removes water and some lactose from the certified organic pasture-raised milk. This means it has less sugar than regular milk -- a huge bonus for healthy snacking (and healthy teeth!) -- plus all the other nutrients are concentrated so that they’re higher per serving. Want to know more? Read all about Ultra here!

As a parent, this milk is what I’ve been waiting for. More nutrition, less sugar, great taste...what’s not to love? We all know a mom’s gotta have options for those picky kiddos, and that’s why you can get it in Whole, 2%, 2% Chocolate, and Fat Free/Skim.

(Parenting hack: I have yet to hear a picky kid turn down a glass of chocolate milk!)

Two boys sitting at a kitchen counter, one smiling at the camera while taking a bite of cheese and the other peeling a stick of string cheese.

Stringles®

Cheese + kids. Need I say more? If your kids are anything like mine, they love cheese, plain and simple -- just like the simple ingredient list of Organic Valley Stringles mozzarella string cheese.

String cheese and cheese sticks really are a perfect snack. Just a few simple ingredients and the right amount of protein (7 grams per serving) keeps those little bellies satisfied without spoiling their dinner. Plus, they’re fun to eat for kids and adults alike!

(Parenting hack #2: If you’re crafty, they can be made into a playful and healthy treat to take to school for birthdays, parties, or whatever is on your calendar.)

Good To Go® Eggs

Hard-boiled eggs have it all. First, Organic Valley eggs come from hens that are Free to Forage in the fresh air and sunshine on organic pastures, and humane animal care is really important to my family. Plus, they’re loaded with 12 grams of protein and more nutrition, they taste great, and -- perhaps most important for us busy parents -- they’re convenient!

Some might argue I should make time to hard boil my own eggs. And maybe they’re right. It’s not like boiling eggs is difficult.

But we don’t live in a perfect world. As a full-time working mom of three, I can assure you: pre-boiled eggs give back time that would have been lost watching water boil -- quite literally. After all, we’ve got places to be!

So let’s get going, fellow moms and dads. Grab some snacks that are both kid- and parent-approved, and tackle whatever the day throws your way. (And here’s your reminder: Don’t forget to switch that laundry!)
