Omega 3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats that our bodies can’t make, so we have to get them from our diet. It is estimated that Omega 3 intake was lower than the recommended amounts in all age groups in America. In fact, research from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey demonstrates that over 90% of Americans are not meeting recommendations for Omega 3.
Some Omega 3 fats include alpha linolenic acid (ALA),eicosatetraenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is a short-chain Omega 3 found mostly in plant sources. EPA and DHA are long-chain Omega 3s found naturally in fatty fish, such as tuna, salmon, herring, and sardines.
Even though plant oils such as flax contain beneficial ALA, our bodies can’t efficiently convert it, so it’s best to get EPA and DHA directly from fish, fortified foods, or supplements. Organic Valley® Family First® is enriched with DHA.
It is estimated that 90% of Americans are deficient in Omega 3 fatty acids. Research has shown that these essential fatty acids play a role in supporting brain health as they relate to how the brain functions, and it impacts cognitive performance at all stages of life.
Each serving of the milk provides approximately 50 mg of DHA.
The DHA added to our milk comes from algal oil derived from algae.
