Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons organic sugar
  • 4 cups ice cubes
  • ½ cup rock salt or kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons crushed organic chocolate sandwich cookies (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons mini marshmallows (optional)

Directions

  1. In a measuring cup, combine Organic Valley® Vanilla Oat Creamer and sugar. Stir until sugar completely dissolves.
  2. Pour the creamer mixture into the quart-size resealable bag. Seal the bag tightly, pressing out as much air as possible.

    Tips

    • Double-check the seal by gently pressing the bag - no leaks allowed or you'll have salty ice cream!

  3. Fill the gallon-size bag with ice cubes. Add salt to the ice and mix gently.

    Tips

    • Rock salt works best, but kosher salt works too. The salt is what makes the magic happen by super-cooling the ice.

  4. Place the sealed quart bag inside the gallon bag with the ice and salt mixture. Seal the gallon bag tightly.
  5. Wrap the gallon bag in towels to protect hands from the cold. Shake vigorously and continuously for 8 to 10 minutes.

    Tips

    • Take turns with kids every few minutes—this is a workout! The more you shake, the creamier your ice cream will be.

  6. Remove the quart bag from the ice mixture. Rinse the outside of the quart bag with cold water to remove any salt residue before opening.
  7. Open the ice cream bag and stir in desired mix-ins. Serve immediately for soft-serve texture.

Tips

  • Make it a science lesson by explaining how salt lowers the freezing point of water to freeze the cream mixture.

  • Try different Organic Valley® Oat Creamers or Heavy Whipping Cream.

  • Double the recipe for larger families but use separate bags as bigger batches don't freeze as evenly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Salt lowers the freezing point of ice, making it colder than 32°F. This super-cold temperature is what freezes your cream mixture into ice cream.

Definitely! Try Caramel, Cinnamon Spice, or Oatmeal Cookie Oat Creamers or Organic Valley® Heavy Whipping Cream.

This ice cream is best enjoyed immediately while soft. You can freeze leftovers, but the texture will be harder and may be icier.
