Frequently Asked Questions

What is Grassmilk?

Grassmilk® from Organic Valley refers to milk and cheese produced from cows that are exclusively fed fresh grasses, dried and stored forages, and a small amount of supplements such as molasses—without any grains. This diet is maintained throughout the year, in both summer and winter.

What brand of milk is grass-fed?

Organic Valley is proud to offer Grassmilk®, our product line of organic, grass-fed milk and cheese. Grassmilk® products come from cows that are exclusively fed fresh grasses, dried and stored forages, and a small amount of supplements like molasses—without any grains.

Is Organic Valley Grassmilk® homogenized or nonhomogenized?

Organic Valley Grassmilk milk is homogenized.

Why isn't all Organic Valley milk and cheese 100% grass fed?

Since grazing is a bedrock principle of our organic farming practices, all Organic Valley farmer-owners nationwide do their utmost to maximize fresh and dried forages to maintain the health and wellbeing of their animals because they know that milk produced from grazing cows contains increased levels of beneficial omega-3 and (CLA) fatty acids.

So while a significant number of Organic Valley farmer-owners around the country do not feed grain, there are several reasons why all Organic Valley milk is not 100% grass-fed.

Some farms' soils are not ready for full conversion to pasture. Cows must be transitioned slowly from a grain diet, to less grain, to no grain. Some farms do not have the land base to produce additional forages the cows require when grain is taken out of their diet.

What do Grassmilk® cows eat?

Like any lactating mammal, humans included, a cow's nutritional and energy needs greatly increase when she produces milk. Grassmilk cows are provided with the highest quality organic pasture grasses and legumes (such as alfalfa and clover) in summer, dried grasses and legumes in the winter, and supplements in the form of minerals, vitamins, and molasses year-round.

What are the nutritional benefits of Organic Valley Grassmilk®?

Nutrient laden, organically managed soils support diverse, lush forages - benefits that translate to the cow's milk in the form of naturally occurring omega-3s, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and calcium.

Is Organic Valley Grassmilk® pasteurized?

All Organic Valley milk is pasteurized because it is required by law in most states. Pasteurization kills harmful bacteria without altering the flavor of the milk and extends the shelf life. Organic Valley meets or exceeds all directives in the FDA's Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO), which outlines federal standards for selling milk products commercially.
